Latest Ellen DeGeneres ad causes another stir

One Million Moms registers disapproval over JC Penney Xmas commercial

This week's lesson in unexpected cultural protests: If nationally franchised department stores cast anyone but stridently heterosexual celebrity spokespeople, they'll apparently be in serious trouble with some conservative groups. Or at least that's what JC Penney's putting up with yet again, on account of its ongoing relationship with Ellen DeGeneres.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, the company debuted its latest holiday commercial starring the comedian and talk-show host. And if the harmless 30-second spot could be accused of any transgression, it'd be corny punchlines at the expense of helpless elves. But according to a recent website update (since seemingly removed) from One Million Moms (a group affiliated with conservative media watchdog American Family Association), "JCP has made their choice to offend a huge majority of their customers again," before decreeing, "Christians must now vote with their wallets."

There may be a a couple slight problems with this call to arms. Enacting the democratic privilege of petitioning corporations whose actions don't square with your values doesn't come down to a "vote." It's not a popular election. Moreover, if millions of stocking-stuffing matriarchs just say no to JCP, where will they purchase Cosby sweaters for the men in their lives? Worth considering, One Million Moms. Worth considering.

As for Ellen, she's unlikely to respond, given her eloquently eviscerating comments in the wake of OMM's prior upheaval back in February. But in case you, or they, missed it, this about sums the controversy up.

Paulo,     I believe we all have different perceptions of Christians & religion as a whole. It's behavior like OMM's that gives true Christianity a bad name. No one is perfect, and we all say or do foolish things in our lives. However OMM's behavior may have gone beyond foolishness?  The God whom I believe in will be the final judge of that. However, I know that behavior reveals something in their hearts that needs change.
As far as religion & science goes?  As science advances with micro & nano biology, I find it hard for anyone to believe there wasn't an intelligent designer, but I respect the person regardless of what they choose to believe.

I'm agreeing that she has a choice to live her life the way she wants to.
I'm agreeing that JC Penney has a right to hire whoever they want as their spokesperson.
And Ellen certainly has a right to say what she wants to, on her own show.

But let's look at this from both sides.  Homosexual activists were very upset when Chick-Fil-A's owner stated his beliefs.  Ban him.  Crash their "party" by having kiss-ins, etc.  The people who showed up at the restaurants were shown nothing but RESPECT and given the same excellent service all customers receive.

These One Million Moms gals have a right to their opinion.  It's called free speech.f

Both sides need to remember this and stop bashing each other.

And, by the way, I am a "conservative Christian".  I just think we all need to stop hating and learn to respect each other.

Interesting that when its the Left's cat getting stomped its wrong, but when the Left does it to a Conservative business, (ie:Chick-Filet) it is OK.   If the Million Mom's want to picket JCP, let them.  Let the Left line up outside JCP and buy, just like the lines outside Chick-Filet this last summer.  Bet you won't see those lines from the Left.

Yeah JCP.  Obviously OMM needs something better to do with their time.  Perhaps gather food for the homeless and buy clothes for the needy.  Maybe JCP would give them a group discount . OMM stop rolling around on the floor in judgment.  I'm a 57 yr old (do I need to say straight?) woman married for 39 yrs. Homosexuality is simply a sexual preference. Get educated OMM.

These people and their morals make me sick....It's a double standard....We as LBGT do not go around trying to sway str8 people to become gay.....They quit giving us S & H green stamps, & Amana microwave ovens for converting long ago. I love str8 people......without them where would we get LBGT people....They just need to find a better hobby....Maybe focus their attention on homeless youth or at risk & abused children.

Oh, no.  Another example of the elusive "liberal journalist fair and balanced" attitude.  I personally couldn't care less about anyone else's sexual preferences or other idiologies unless they affect me personally; however, I do care about gross distortions based on personal idealogies of "journalists".

I don't know Kenny Herzog.  I have enjoyed and weathered many years without knowing Kenny Herzog.  Effectively, in my view, Kenny Herzog is a non-entity.  His opinion is important to me?  Why?

I do, however, believe and appreciate that Kenny Herzog has a right to his personal opinion and to express those opinions as he chooses.

I lament the obvious fact that Kenny Herzog cannot, or for some reasons unknown to me, simply state his own opinion but must instead report his, by definition biased, perception of the opinions of others.  Obviously also is the fact that Kenny Herzog has little respect for the intelligence of those unfortunate enough to stumble across his "reporting".  I must disagree with Kenny Herzog that the reader is unable to draw his own conclusions from a set of facts without help from Kenny Herzog.

In more succint form, Kenny Herzog, and with all due respect, your agenda is showing and I don't have much respect for biased reporting.  It would have been appropriate had the writing been immediately identified as statement of an opinion but that fact was discernable only after wasting time reading the diatribe.

Your life and opinions are yours.  Please don't waste my time with burdening me with them.  As for Ellen DeGeneres, she has worked very diligently over several years to gain a good and respectable reputation.  I admire her for that.  That doesn't mean that I have to approve or blame, judge, condemn, or censure her for her lifestyle or for her opinion.  It does mean that, at least in my view, your puny attempt to defend her will be most likely an embarrassment to her if she ever hears about it.  You obviously don't get it.  Try a little respect for the person instead of focusing on your own agenda at all costs.

It's a simple solution--- If you don't like the commercial don't watch it. Buy your clothes somewhere else. I like the commercial and I like Ellen. How would you feel if people complained about christian commercials. "Thou shalt not judge!!" Seems I have heard that somewhere. Oh yea- God said that. Look in the mirror. Everyone has sins.

How come all those face book comments didnt have a face pic or a name? Made Up comments?

and i kno what you ARE ALL going to say...she hid them for privacy...well whatever happened to the good old blur that would lend credence and validity to the audience while maintianing anonymity of the person commenting...lol

ELLEN IS A FRAUD

I appreciated Moms speaking out but I must say, WOW. I like Ellen DeGeneres although I don't agree with her life style choice. But if we are going to single her out let's look at some of the other entertainers that appear in various department store ads. They maybe heterosexual but they openly do not conduct themselves as Christians or of those whom have given their lives over to Christ. They are forever in the media causing discord, they are always photographed in bars/clubs holding and endorsing alcohol, and even proclaimed christians cheat on their spouses, are dishonest about reporting their finances. Let's ask ourselves, "Are we truly and completing living according to The Word of God?" Is God pleased with everything we do and if we are honest and answer no but yet we still don't change or behavior...............

clean up your act and start welcoming the way the world is that you help create!!!

One million moms need to spend more time being moms and less trying to tell other people what to watch or buy. I am a 60 year old Catholic heterosexual woman who is also an Ellen fan. She's funny and entertaining and I don't see anything wrong with the Christmas commercial. In fact I think it's adorable. And I will continue to shop at J.C.Penney.

I was raised to be a Christian that is accepting and non-judgmental of others.  These so-called christians of OMM are nothing but bullies.  How is this directly affecting your life??  Total hypocrites!  You don't like it then don't shop there, end of story.  I never have been a regular customer of JCP, but plan on stopping in a lot more than I ever would have before.

Relating to the topic of homosexuality, make me think of a tweet I once read from the amazing Morgan Freeman.  " I hate the word homophobia .It's not a phobia.  You are not scared.  You are an a******."

I love Ellen and support JCP's use of her in its ads, but wasn't it just a few weeks ago that a liberal group freaked out because Macy's ads featured Donald Trump?  Neither party has the market cornered on crazy, it would seem.

Regardless, I find it entertaining that the media excoriates a conservative group for pressuring a corporation based on a conservative values (Ellen), yet canonizes a liberal group for pressuring a corporation based on liberal values (Trump).

There is nothing wrong with the commercial, it is cute.  People are so homophobic that they don't even want her in ads?  That is just so stupid.  So she is Gay -- so what!?  She is successful, a great comedian, she is in a monogamous relationship(more than can be said for A LOT of celebrities), and she does a lot of good through her show - giving things to people who really need the help!  If you don't like Ellen, then don't watch the commercials, but stop complaining about them!  Get over it and move on with your life.  She is not on the commercial saying "I am gay and all of your kids should think that gay is great."  She doesn't push the fact that she is gay, she doesn't even mention it very often.  If people would stop complaining about it, most kids would not even have any idea that she is gay - unless they see pictures of her with her wife, or watch her talk show regularly. My son is 15 and he thinks Ellen is funny, my niece and nephew are 3 and 2, and they think her commercials are funny.  My son recently heard all the flack about the commercial and Ellen being Gay and he said "She Is?"  He watches her show occasionally and he had no idea. People need to grow up and realize everyone is different  -- so you don't agree with her being gay - well, I am sure she doesn't really care - the only one that really cares is you!

I am a very strong Christian and don't like the comments  about "Christians".  I have no problem with the commercial and have no idea why everyone goes on the attack.  Please, let's all love each other.  We don't need separation esp. during the Christmas Season.  And Yes at least JC Penny is not afraid to say Merry Christmas.  As a Christian, we are called to love as Christ loves and that includes people who disagree with us, people who  choose to live differently,  and quite frankly everyone.  Let's skip the judgment on people.  Whether it be on Christians, non-christians, homosexuals or straight people.  And it is not about our deeds, we are called to love.  How are we representing God without the love of each other.
Let's not lose sight of what this holiday season is really about.

My biggest problem with this article is that it seems to be making fun of the OMM group,,,,,,,,,,buuuuuutttttttttt if it was a "minority" group such as gays getting made or blacks getting mad, latinos, etc. then they would be well within their rights to bitch and moan and be offended,,,,,,,,,but since it's heterosexuals, then screw them because they have no right to be offended.

Personally I am fed up with all this "I'm offended" Bullsh!t. Just get offended and then crawl into the corner of your basement and suck on your thumb but don't make a huge stink about it. But if one group can do it and is supported by the media for doing it then be fair to all the groups..........no matter how much I can't stand them.

What happened to America?????

I don't see a thing wrong with the commercial.  I'm an Ellen fan regardless of her sexuality, she makes me laugh and I applaud her for her success in today's PC society.  I'm just sick and tired of all these groups, people, etc... who may think they are so perfect and proper and NEVER do a thing wrong in their life, trying to change our society to their beliefs.  I hope the "moms" of this group don't end up having a gay child because I would love to see how that would play out in their PERFECT world. I will not stop shopping JCPenny because they're unhappy with their spokes model choice. Can we please worry about things in our world that can actually do us harm.
