When NBC's number-one comedy, "The Office," returns next season, the payroll will be missing at least five of the major characters whom viewers have grown to love.

Bing: More about 'The Office'

The latest casualty, according to TV Guide, is B.J. Novak, who plays Dunder-Mifflin temp Ryan Howard and is the series' lead writer. Novak may still make occasional appearances, and even write. However, his full-time tenure is over.

Also: Taboo TV | Plus: Boys of Summer | Stars who were fired from shows

Got those scorecards out? Here are the latest known statuses of this past season's lead characters:

Out for good: James Spader (Robert Calfornia)

His arc was never intended to last longer than one season.

Out most likely for good: Rainn Wilson (Dwight Shrute), Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapur) and Paul Lieberstein (Toby Flanderson)

According to most reports, Wilson will star in an NBC "Office" spin-off called "The Farm," which will be run behind the scenes by Lieberstein, who served the same function for "The Office." Kaling is set to star in a new FOX fall comedy called "The Mindy Project." Return "Office" cameos by one or more of these characters is possible but not probable.

Out with guest appearances likely: B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard)

In, but scaling back their appearances to accommodate movie careers: John Krasinski (Jim Halpert) and Ed Helms (Andy Bernard)

In: Jenna Fisher (Pam Halpert), Catherine Tate (Nellie Bertram), Ellie Kemper (Erin Hannon), Leslie David Baker (Stanley Hudson), Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin), Brian Baumgarther (Kevin Malone), Craig Robinson (Darryl Philbin), Oscar Nunez (Oscar Martinez), Creed Bratton (Creed Bratton), Phyllis Smith (Phyllis Vance), Kate Flannery (Meredith Palmer) and Zach Woods (Gabe Lewis)

Will enough of your favorite characters be back to justify the space on your DVR? Tell us below!

Season 9 of "The Office" premieres Thursday, Sept. 20, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

No Dwight and only partial Jim?  They made the show, without them its nothing.  The Jim/Dwight pranks were always my favorite, too bad they don't do as much anymore and now they're both leaving in some capacity.  I'm sad, this was my favorite show before Michael left, but I do realize actors need to move on to greater things.  End the show with dignity, while its still near the top.

Put this show out of its misery.  They should have ended it when Michael Scott left, and they should definitely end it now.  The last season was terrible, the new one is sure to be worse.  Who are the storylines going to revolve around?  Kevin?  Angela?  Every episode is agonizing.  Really makes me appreciate Seinfeld going out on top the way it did.

Well it lost a lot losing Michael , and they really stretched the writing to try and make it work, which usually never does. But dwight makes the show work, and without him it will be like plain old vanilla ice cream, still good but not what you'd go out and buy. But who knows maybe new blood is just what it needs ill check it out and see.

I don't know.  Last year I was on the fence, but it wasn't because Michael Scott was gone.  I was also on the fence the previous year when he was still there.  For whatever reason, this series seems to be slowly but surely boring me.

I will say I like the "Nellie Bertram" character.  She's not bad at all.  James Spader's character was OK, but I think I prefer him more in the movies I've seen him in.  The more I saw him, the more boring I felt his character was.

I'll stick with it for this coming season.  We'll see...

I'll watch, because it still will probably be better than those ridiculous reality shows. But, like last year it will be difficult to get through. I can only remember one episode that actually made me laugh. As funny as Dwight is, I'm sure his spin-off will go the way of such spin-off classics as "Joey" and "After MA**** a shame Steve Carrell had to leave, it's just not the same without him.  RIP "The Office"

Just end the show!  It was too painful to watch last season without Michael, and these cuts will make it even worse.

This show should have ended with Michael's departure. I rather watch past seasons on Netflix than 'The Office' without Michael.

Dwight cannot leave for the following reasons:

1 He owns the freaking building.

2. The whole Dwight/Angela dynamic, which is one of the BETTER dynamics is lost.

3. He and Jims battles have been a LARGE part of what's carried the show.

Speaking of Jim, I really hope his role isn't too reduced. The Florida episodes last year where he and Pam were apart absolutely sucked.

What? Seriously? Damn...I guess that's one less show I'll be watching.

I'd like to blame NBC as it's usually their fault, but it seems like a choice by the actors, which I suppose I can respect.

Still, that show is most definitely not going to make it beyond this season now at this point.

Seriously?  Who really cares?  Ricky Gervais was smart enough to realize that the original British version of "The Office" should only last one season, and after that, it was done...done...done.  This American version, which is lacking sorely by comparison, should've done likewise because it's far overstayed its welcome.

They should have ended it with Michael's departure or shortly there-after... please put it out of it's misery... it is now just sad...

I have loved this show since the beginning. The show has seemed a little lacking since Michael left but with favorites like Jim and Dwight and their antics and the rest of the cast, it's held up ok. Losing most of the cast, not a good sign. I will watch and see, but I don't see how it's going to succeed without people like Dwight and Jim.

The show is on it's last leg. Laughs were hard to come by last year, this year will be even harder to come by unless they get back to original premise of the show.

I don't think it will be same without Dwight.  Everyone is excited to see him prove he is the father of Angela's baby.

The Office is Hilarious, it will go on without the departing characters. One of the best after work decompression time shows-unlike the "reality"/competition shows.  Ya' don't have to think about it....it's just funny.

It's been tough enough to watch this silly show...........but catching up on reruns, I have learned to like the same characters who are leaving.  I won't be watching the new season.
