Thousands Punked by Mermaid Doc

Discovery Channel discovers how gullible viewers are

Evidence has just been uncovered that many TV viewers are dumber than we imagined.

"Mermaids: The Body Found" is a "Blair Witch Project"-style mockumentary purporting to question whether the mythical half-men/half-fish actually swim among us. Using actors and a faked mermaid skeleton as "evidence," the two-hour special aired on Animal Planet over Memorial Day, and was then rebroadcast on Sunday to a wider audience on the Discovery Channel.

Bing: More about 'Mermaids: The Body Found'

Even though the show's description clearly identified it as "science fiction," hundreds of thousands of viewers Internet-searched "mermaid body found" after the latest broadcast, according to reports. And those disappointed to read that Ariel is not real took to the web to vent at the truth-hiders.

"Like 90% of the ocean remains unexplored and you're telling me mermaids don't exist," one Twitter user wrote.

"What should be upseting ppl more than anything else, is the FACT the Armed Forces keeps things like this from US All the Time!!!!!! " noted a commenter to Discovery's website.

Having received hundreds of telephone inquiries about the mermaid body after the special's initial broadcast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration felt sufficiently compelled to officially declare that "no evidence of aquatic homanoids has ever been found."

Yeah, well that's just what liars would say.

ITS OBVIOUS THAT THIS POKE AT THE NAVY HAD 2 B EMBELLISHED WITH THE AQUATIC APE THEORY AND CGI CARTOONS BEFORE IT COULD EVER MAKE IT INTO YOUR LIVING ROOM-YOU CAN'T THROW MUD AT THE GOVERNMENT AND EXPECT 2 GET AWAY WITH IT!THIS WASNT ABOUT MERMAIDS U GLUEBAGS! THE REAL STORY IS WHAT THE NAVY IS DOING 2 THE MARINE LIFE-THE INVESTIGTORS OF THE BEACHED CREATURES ONLY STUMBLED ON THE HIDDEN AGENDA ANDNOW EVERYONE IS TRYING 2 COVER THERE ASSES AND DIVERT THE SUBJECT MATTER-EVER HEAR OF ROSSWELL?THEY'VE BEEN SEEING ALIENS 4 THOUSANDS OF YEARS-BUT HEY, THE GOVERNMENT SAYS WE ARE ALL CRAZY-ALIENS DON'T EXIST!

I do believe that Mermaids have existed, however, I am not sure they still do?

Sure after the show aired thry are saying it is not real come on the government has been covering things up from the public for so many years you can not believe a word any government agency has to say and if you are one of the ones who do have proof you fall out a window die in a car crash or you commit suicide all the above with a little help from one of their black opps team

Whether mermaids exist or not, in my opinion there's no way that humans know of everything out there. Legends and myths come from somewhere. I do believe that the government hides a lot of things from us, but mermaids? Who knows. There's really no way to know for sure unless humans have been to and seen and studied every part of every corner of the planet in order for us to definitely say that something like that 100% does not exist. Just like the Lochness Monster, Bigfoot, etc... no one really knows for sure. There's a lot of debate on both sides. It's kinda fun to think about the possiblities, but that doesn't make it fact. Just a few centuries ago people all thought the world was flat... Just saying... :)

If this show was suppose to be a 'blair with project' but with mermaids then it should have not be aired on the discovery channel. i find it disgusting that the channel thinks this is funny to actually dope society. First of all, i never saw any disclaimer before the show, during or after. The government has lied to the pubic since forever, i wouldnt be surprised if they keep stating it over and over that they dont exist cause they are trying to hide the fact that it is or could be a possibility they do.

Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of response that Discovery Channel is hoping to generate, because it generates publicity and "buzz".  Seeing the number of people that were initally fooled during the first airing, a responsible media outlet would insert a 5-second disclaimer stating that it was a "dramatization" at the end of commercial breaks.

But, search hits mean revenue, and as has been said, nobody has ever gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the consumer.  It's a sad commentary as to what the Discovery Channel has devolved into.  It used to be about knowledge and education -- but there's no money in that.

Well that's disappointing!  I was convinced - didn't see the Sci-Fi part, but it still doesn't mean they aren't out there.  I wouldn't say we are gullible, most people believe or want to believe in these kind of stories, hence why many believe in God!  Seems like a complete waste of money, but so does reality TV.  Now I can't trust  the Discovery Channel, add that to just about every other source of information.  Next you'll see another article saying this one was punking us and the documentary was real!

The problem with this is that most people channel surf and stumble upon garbage television like this so unless you watched it from the beginning you would not see the part where it says the show is "SCIENCE FICTION" The water ape theory has been basically denied by the scientific community for a long time but your average person might be pushed into believing the possibility because of how they designed the show to appear as a documentary. Its wrong that they do this. Television these days is nothing but lies. From reality shows, to the news to fake documentaries like this. Its time America turned off their televisions.......

My mom and sister watched it also, the mermaid thing wasn't as interesting as the implication of the military killing the sea life.  I also think that is why they're trying to damage control.  Maybe the discovery channel was after that all along, it wasn't actually about the mermaids, it was to get some kind of info out about the military.  It's probably not only our military, there have been for years implications that sonar and radar etc. affects animals.

I saw no disclaimer on this doc that said it was sci-fi. Of course the most interesting thing about the doc, wasn't the possibility of mermaids existing, but the possibility of the military weapons testing, causing the whale and dolphin beaching mysteries.

Regardless if you do not believe in the possibility of mermaids, even though they have been reported throughout history, by credible witnesses such as Columbus, I believe that the truth behind the weapons testing is what caused our unaccountable, secretive, manipulative and deceptive government to respond so aggressively to paint anyone as gullible for watching or believing anything in this wonderfully produced show.

If it were just about mermaids, why would they even bother to address it? Any of you who like to insult others for being gullible, need to research more before joining in with what appears to be an attempt to misdirect your attention from details about weapons they do not wish to be revealed.

Anyone gullible enough to insult someone who believes that conspiracies do exist, hasn't been watching what is going on in the world lately and is under the brainwashing effect of the media, and it would actually be you, who are the gullible ones.

It is physically impossible to overestimate the ignorance of a mob. It's the Heisenberg Principle of Social Engineering. No I'm not talking about Bryan Cranston.

Since the show was aired on the Discovery Channel, I felt that it could have some validity.  But if this is like a Blair Witch movie, then it should have aired on HBO.

Yesterday I commented on a MSNNow story about Women IQs surpassing me for the first time. I responded with a theory that women aren't necessarily getting smarter, society as whole is just getting dumber, and people believing this just goes to reinforce my point.;

There's a thin line between gullibility and trust. I'll never encourage my children to watch anything on discovry again. Being tricked, fooled, scammed, punked, lied to are all the same!!!!!!!!!!

It consistently amazes me how dumb people are. Maybe I am getting dumber as I continually believe that will eventually gain some modicum of common sense.

I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale if anyone would like to buy it, and a royal cousin in  Nigeria who is rich but needs help getting money out of the country. Send inquiries to me@ you_are_an_idiot.

This mermaid idea is very similar to alien ideas.  If you go and plug in the researcher's name (the man) from the mermaid show on the internet, you'll find that the Homeland Security has taken over the website.  You can not get any information, just like the aliens huh?  Anything that the Government is involved with, there has to be some truth too.
