'Fresh Prince' Aunt Rips Will Smith
Janet Hubert explains why she boycotts all reunions
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air has a fresh aunt. Janet Hubert -- the original Aunt Viv on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" -- boycotted a reunion of the famed TV sitcom last week because, as she is quoted in this TMZ report, "I will never do anything with an (expletive) like Will Smith." (We choose not to print the word, but suffice it to say that it refers to the part of the anatomy that she's ripped anew for Smith.)
"He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up," TMZ quotes Hubert. "This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn't know the word."
Last week, Smith reunited with former cast mates James Avery, Karyn Parsons, Alfonso Riberio and Tatyana Ali at a luncheon benefiting a Parsons charity called Sweet Blackberry. It was the first known reunion of the "Fresh Prince" cast since the show was canceled -- and "Independence Day" made Smith a ginormous movie star -- in 1996.
Smith posted the photo below on his Facebook fan page, writing: "Got the Holiday season started right with a 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air' reunion…there's nothin' like spending Holidays with fam!" And indeed, everything seemed all peace on earth -- until fans started noticing the absence of Hubert and her replacement, Daphne Reid, in addition to Joseph Marcell, who played wisecracking butler Geoffrey. So tabloid reporters began asking questions of the absentees.
TMZ quotes Hubert as being "still upset with the way she was fired from the show." Hubert was replaced in 1993, midway through the show's run. According to TMZ, Smith turned on her because she "wouldn't kiss his butt."
So far, Smith has not commented. However, in 1993, he was quoted by the Atlanta Journal as telling a local radio station: “She said once, ‘I’ve been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.’ No matter what, to her I’m just the antichrist.”
Cast member Vernee Watson Johnson had something to do with one of the accusers of MJ and they going to Neverland. I met her prior to Prince, when she opened a casting/acting school on North Lake in Pasadena, California in the early 80's. I took my daughter in there (age 6), as she had publicized that she was connected and endorsed by actors like Ivan Dixon (Hogan's Hero's fame). She wanted to charge immediately for photo's, etc. making her already suspicious. Unbeknownst to she, my Aunt Vivianne was friends with Ivan and called him, and he told her that he never endorsed her, really didn't know who she is and she must be a sham and to stay away from her.
Im seriously pissed about this whole thing, because as far as Im concerned, people were looking for a show to rely on after the Cosby Show left, and a few years later, enter The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It was hip, happening, and not to mention, funny as hell! Even having special guests didnt hurt the show such as William Shattner, Don Cheedle, the late Heavy D, and Kim Fields just to name a few! So why am I pissed? Because the original Aunt Viv wont do it! I didnt care much for the new Aunt Viv, and she was easily forgettable. You also cant even think about having a reunion of this show without having Jeffery, no way, no how! This dude was brash, somewhat cocky, and a smartass, but his comedic timing, and seriousness to his craft was obvious! There wasnt a better butler character since Robert Guillaume's 80's character Benson! I guess what Im saying is, if theres key figures missing in the reuion, and theres no way that old beefs can be squashed, then theres no use in doing it! Whats next, no Carlton?
I heard more than once that early on in Will Smith's career that he was quite the little A**hole, which was when he was on the sitcom. I'm not sayinng he's like that now, but if he indeed got her fired, of course she's still upset, as most of us would be.
Being fair to Will she is sour grapes because of having little to do after that show. I actually preferred her replacement, just my opinion.
Now on to the egomaniacs.
If I have to see the wife whom I considered not that talented and those untalented children continued to be pushed down my throat I am certain I will have no alternative but to heave.
Will you are a brilliant and talented man and I appreciate you , but PLEASE stop, forcing your brood upon us, we aren't buying it.
While I am at it, I am sick of JLO, Beyonce, Shakira and Justin, you may be talented buy give people time to miss you. You over saturate and nauseate!
She's one of a long and skeevy tradition of firing a good actress and replacing her with a younger/prettier one a couple seasons into the show. It was also done on "Night Court" and "Monk" just to name a few. I'd still be angry, too. It's discrimination of a very ugly kind.
Janet Hubert is a terrible actress. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag!
Sounds like she is jealous of Smith's talent and success. Green is NOT her best color!
1.) Who says she's not over it? She was asked a question and she gave an honest answer.
2.) More than likely she did move on, which is why she does want to go back in the past, obligating herself to a reunion.
3.) Why does she have to be the "bigger person" and "get over it."? shouldn't Mr. Smith be the bigger person and apologize to her for being an A.H.?
4.) I don't think she was bitter, I think she was disgusted that Hollywood is NOT like Broadway (which is where she originated her craft)... Broadway is about TALENT... and Hollywood is about "ENTERTAINMENT"......
