Claire Danes cries foul

'Homeland' star wants people to leave her alone when it comes to her facial expressions

'Claire Danes' '/' Showtime

Claire Danes is annoyed.

Entire memes and YouTube videos have been dedicated to her not-so-attractive "crying face," a trait that came to light when she impressed the masses on "Homeland."

Danes' friend, fellow actress Anne Hathaway, even spoofed the expression when she played Danes' "Homeland" character, Carrie, on "Saturday Night Live." The running joke during the spoof? "It's like her whole face is chewing gum." Hathaway apparently apologized in advance and sent Danes flowers afterward as a conciliatory gesture.

"I mean, I'm vain about giving the best possible performance I can give, but I'm never concerned about how, you know, physically desirable I'm going to be in the process," Danes said in the February issue of Elle. "In my personal life, I have plenty of vanity, but onscreen I'm not representing myself. I'm representing this person I'm playing. I have to say, I find it very odd that it's been sort of objectified.

"It's just the way feelings register on my face. It's not calculated; it's not an aggressive gesture. It's been isolated from the rest of my work, like it's a tacked-on thing. It's not."

Hopefully in time, Danes, 33, will lighten up about the public's digs at her "crying face." Without realizing it, her annoyance only makes the whole thing funnier.

In the meantime, she has her Golden Globes (she won her fourth one Sunday), Emmys, a handsome husband (actor Hugh Dancy), a new baby boy and a hit show to keep her smiling. The third season of "Homeland" will begin shooting in May.

"Homeland" returns Sunday, Sept. 29, on Showtime.

Um you people DO realize you can mock people and still like them right? Or am I the only person here who has brothers? Or friends that aren't thin skinned babies? So what if she has an ugly cry face when she's *playing a character on a tv show*? THAT'S ALL IT IS! Sheesh!

with all the problems this country has, bad economics, idiots killing children in school, government corruption, etc and you jealous envious people mostly female, worrying about this great actress' face.

I have always thought Claire was a very good actress and is unique and interesting, not just the usual pretty face.  I have seen her cry many, many times over the years and I have never thought she looked odd, just emoting as she should.  I have never liked comics that make fun of others... not funny to me unless the person is doing it to his or her self.

Thank god we did not have youtube in 1982. Or else I would have to read simpletons type that Streep does not look attractive crying in "sophies choice".

Guess I don't get it.  Who looks good crying?  Even joyful crying isn't the prettiest thing to watch.  Crying causes the face to contort & it's not pretty.  So why is her crying face different than anybody else's?  Is there nothing more worthwhile to report?

HAHA! I had the absolute worst experience with Claire Danes so I do not feel sorry for her at all! My husband were in NY...on my birthday..and we wanted to go into SOHO and shop. It was our first time there. After getting off the subway and looking around we had no idea what direction to take. We saw a two people who had stopped to chat as they were walking their dogs and my husband thought to ask directions. As he is talking to this woman, I'm am thinking she looks so familiar because of her expressions so when they are through talking I made the mistake of saying she looked familiar and is your name Claire, I'm sorry I can't think of your last name but I loved you in Shop Girl and at that point she absolutely flipped out started yelling at us that we had set her up and who did we think we were...My husband is freaking and asking what is going on and all I could say was have a great day Claire because you have totally misread the situation..If we had had cameras out MAYBE I could have understood her reaction but we were totally blow away by her reaction. Now when we travel to NY, I don't even look twice at stars....

"Without realizing it, her annoyance only makes the whole thing FUNNIER" .....Really MSN?  REALLY?

The word "funnier" is not even in my Webster's Dictionary.....but bullying is. It's so disappointing to read trash like this about an Actress of her caliber. Ms Madden Toby is an example of the abnormally nasty and aggressive attitude that US "women" have developed lately about other women in general and especially toward beautiful and successful women. Bleatings from a Jealous Twit. The inability to accept emotions and the facial expressions that go with them is not normal. The Bullying Problem is only getting worst and MSN is not helping running like this.

She is the best, absolutely love her.  Those morons who are doing that to her are just jealous - I mean really what talent do they have except bashing other people.

Honestly? I love 'Homeland' and the reason I do is because I love watching Clare Danes. She makes it all so real for me. I don't have a problem with her 'quirky' expressions. I just always look forward to the next show. Thank you...

One of the great actresses of our time, have you seen her in "Stage Beauty", just one great performance after another, she will be one remembered because of her great talent, who cares about her facial expressions

Jan 17, 2013 6:34PM
I wish I could like her. I've tried and tried and tried. And we have the same birthday but she seems so snobbish to me.
Jan 17, 2013 6:30PM
I think I know the scene that they're talking about, and I remember thinking that her acting was very raw and true to what someone who would be experiencing emotions that her character was experiencing.  Kudos to Danes for being one of the most convincing actors of her generation.
Jan 17, 2013 6:10PM
really, of all the things in the world we need to address and this is the best we can come up with?  just a thought
Jan 17, 2013 6:04PM
There would be a lot of ecstatic men if all women had as attractive a face.....

I thought there was a war on bullying MSN, isn't it evil and leading to the demise of the weak? I guess that's unless you work for MSN, then you get a free pass to be a total douchbag
